Job Description

Position Overview:

The Novelis Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, Ga is currently seeking a Lab Technician. This position reports directly to the Laboratory Leader and will be responsible for operating a confocal microscope, XRF, ICP, and conducting friction tests. The ideal candidate will have experience in performing various analytical experiments and will adhere to Novelis' safety and quality guidelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates personal commitment to safety and good EHS awareness by following established safety rules and practices during all activities. Ensure all users and visitors to the lab are compliant with Novelis Safety Absolutes and other EHS guidelines.
  • Maintain good laboratory practices including good housekeeping to follow work instructions and perform testing in order to deliver quality test data.
  • Carry out laboratory tasks requested from project leaders utilizing Novelis Laboratory Information System (LIMS). Provide input to project leaders on the lab testing plan and record lab observations in addition to test data.
  • Make schedules of personnel and equipment so that lab tasks are carried out according the priorities for OTIF delivery
  • Prepare samples for confocal microscope, ICP, XRF, FTIR and other testing methods for investigations using various sample prep techniques.
  • Conduct surface topography characterization on samples of aluminum alloys as well as other material systems for purposes of surface assessment.
  • Conduct tribological testing on aluminum samples and other material system for the purpose of friction and tribological understanding.
  • Conduct XRF analysis on the samples of aluminum alloys to analyze the overall chemical composition of metal constituents, as well as surface pretreatment.
  • Use ICP-MS for the analysis of trace metals and inorganic content in metal samples through liquid digestion.
  • Run qualitative and quantitative analysis of elements, coatings and lubricants using different spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, NIR and GDOES.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Entry to this level typically requires 3-5 years of progressive experience in analytical chemistry and a high school diploma or associates degree with passion for chemical/materials sciences.
  • Must be Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • The ability to acquire new knowledge, capability and skills in elemental composition analysis as well as XRF, ICP-OES, and spectroscopy techniques such as FTIR, NIR, and GDOES.
  • Hands on experience working with wet chemistry techniques with an emphasis on material science.
  • Disciplined in work ethics and carry out lab tasks to maintain good operation.
  • Desire and ability to collaborate and communicate across functions is essential to this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of analytical chemistry
  • Experience with Aluminum systems
